Did you know that minke whales close their eyes most of the time, especially when surface feeding? The slowness of chin-up blows allow such observations and amazing photographs. (© ORES - Ursula Tscherter)
ORES Newsletter 1/2006
Each summer is different. Each summer is exciting. This is certainly true. Yet, the summer of 2005 offered more special experiences than any other season before. Beside the excitement and fulfilment of the regular research, two events which brought life and death close together were the most moving and deepest experiences I ever have had. These were to rescue one entangled minke whale and to cut up another. Certainly, words can hardly describe what all of us who participated in the past season's activities experienced. However, this newsletter shall give you a little insight into our 2005 season and a reminder of the threats whales are facing nowadays. I hope you find great pleasure in reading it.
